Inside-Out Body Restoration |Private In-Home Movement Therapy in Northern Virginia

By Ellen Yates, Founder of N2Shape

I was working with a client this week and it reminded me of something I see all the time. There is so much going on right now—so many procedures, so much medical intervention, so many diagnoses. Diet matters, lifestyle matters, but what I continue to see, working with clients and families throughout Northern Virginia, is something more fundamental being missed: the body isn’t functioning the way it should.

I see people who don’t feel good. They have no energy. No drive. They’re swollen. They can’t move the way they used to. Some can’t even get up easily from a chair or a couch. They feel heavy in their body. They’re frustrated. Some are depressed. Some are facing health issues or upcoming surgeries and just want to feel better before they go through it. Others simply don’t know what else to do—they’ve tried things, but nothing has really worked.

People are doing more, trying more, going to more doctors—and yet something still isn’t connecting. That’s because most people are focused on the outside. What you can see. What you can measure.

I don’t start there.

When I talk about the core, I’m not talking about abs or surface muscles. I’m talking about what’s deeper—the diaphragm, the deep core, and the pelvic floor. These are the muscles you can’t see, but they regulate pressure, circulation, and how your body actually works. If that system isn’t working, nothing else is going to feel right.

What I consistently see underneath all of it is this: nothing is pumping.

I say it all the time. If nothing is pumping, nothing is moving. And when nothing is moving, things build up. Pressure builds. Fluid builds. The body feels heavy, stuck, and disconnected.

Think of your core and pelvic floor like a sink. It’s where everything starts. It’s where pressure is managed and where fluid either flows or backs up. When that system is working, things move. When it’s not, everything just sits.

Families will ask me, “Why is my mother so swollen? The doctors can’t figure it out.” I can usually see it right away. She’s sitting most of the day. She’s not moving. She’s not breathing well. The system isn’t working. There’s no pump. The body depends on movement and pressure changes—driven by breathing and deep muscle activation—to circulate blood and lymphatic fluid. When that doesn’t happen, fluid stays in the body, pressure builds, and people feel heavy, tight, and restricted.

Sitting plays a major role. When you sit for long periods, especially as you get older, everything compresses—the pelvis, the pelvic floor, the diaphragm. Over time the body adapts to that position. People think they’ve forgotten how to breathe, but they haven’t; their body has adapted to being stuck. That’s when things start to change. Movement becomes harder. The body feels weaker—not just because of muscle loss, but because the system underneath isn’t working anymore.

This is where most approaches fall short.

When people go to traditional training, they’re often told, “We need to work on your strength.” And the approach is to start lifting, start doing exercises like bicep curls, start building muscle.

But many of the people I see can’t even do a bicep curl.

They can’t move well.
They can’t breathe well.
They don’t have the foundation to begin that kind of work.

So how are you going to build strength on top of that?

You can’t.

By the time someone gets to this point—where movement is difficult, where the body feels restricted, where breathing isn’t working—it’s not just about strength anymore. It’s about function. In many cases, it becomes serious. It affects independence, quality of life, and overall health.

That’s where my work comes in.

I restore the body back to a place where it can function again—from the inside out. I get the system working so that movement becomes possible, breathing improves, and the body can respond.

And then, when someone is ready, that’s where traditional training has a place.

At N2Shape, we offer both. I focus on restoring the body and getting the system working. And I have other highly qualified trainers who work with clients who are further along—clients who are ready for more traditional strength training, conditioning, and fitness work.

It’s not one or the other.

It’s about starting in the right place.

Some people need this work first. Others are ready for the next level. And many move from one to the other.

I’ve been doing this for over 40 years, and I’m 64 years old. I know what matters. During COVID, I let my own strength go, and I felt it. I didn’t have the same ability to move or function. I had to go back to square one—back to the inside out—before I could rebuild anything else. That’s what happens. One day you wake up and realize you can’t do what you used to do. At that point, you don’t start on the outside. You start with the system.

You can’t do this alone.

By the time your body is limited—when you’re not moving well, not breathing well, or things just don’t feel right—it’s not about doing a few exercises on your own. It doesn’t work that way. This is treatment.

It’s hands-on, guided work that you have to feel in your body. It’s not something you can read, watch, or figure out on your own.

People ask me what I do, and it’s hard to fully explain. It’s like asking an orthopedic surgeon to describe exactly what they do during surgery. You can describe it, but until it’s done, you don’t fully understand it.

I’ve worked on thousands of people. I’ve worked on myself. I know what works.

I restore the body back to health by getting the system working again—from the inside out.

And it takes consistency.

Most people need to work with me at least two to three times a week, especially in the beginning, to really change how their body is functioning. This is not a one-time fix.

But when the body starts to respond, you feel it. You feel better. You move better. You function better.

That’s the goal.

If you feel tight, swollen, stiff, or disconnected—or if you’re watching someone you love go through this—this is exactly what I specialize in. I work with clients throughout Northern Virginia, in their homes, in assisted living, and in private settings, to restore movement, improve circulation, and help the body function the way it’s designed to.

You can get stronger later.

First, you need to get the system working.
